Origins
Meals on Wheels was launched by Senior Citizens, Inc. sixty years ago. At that time, we served a handful of clients. Today our Meals on Wheels program is the region’s leading provider, serving over 1,800 home-delivered and group-setting meals daily.
Dedication
Every Monday through Friday, our thoroughly- trained and highly-talented staff gathers in our kitchen facility to prepare hot, nutritious meals that are distributed throughout Chatham, Bryan, Effingham, and Liberty counties. Each meal is prepared according to menus designed by a certified nutritionist that guarantees variety, flavor, and quality. In fact, each of our meals exceeds the federal guidelines for one-third of a typical senior’s daily nutritional needs.
Twelve Thousand Meals a Week!
How many seniors are served by Meals on Wheels? More than 1,800 meals are currently being prepared each day. Each of these meals is vacuum-packed and delivered hot to each recipient. A home-delivered meal also includes refrigerated items – like milk or pudding – as well as fresh bread and, often, fresh fruit.
Staying in Touch
More than 125 volunteers, as well as Senior Citizens, Inc. staff, deliver meals. These dedicated volunteers are actually another, often overlooked, benefit of Meals on Wheels – a daily point of human contact. This brief, but meaningful, visit helps ensure the recipient is eating properly, living in safe and well-maintained surroundings, and receiving any additional care he or she may need. Not only do lasting bonds often develop between volunteers and meal recipients, on many occasions, our volunteers have been credited with reporting serious injury, home fires, or other situations that have put the senior in immediate danger.
